History of the Firm

In 1948, George W. Phillips, Jr. and Spurgeon (“Sparky”) Avakian founded the firm. Both George and Sparky went on to serve for decades on the Alameda County Superior Court. In 1951, J. Richard (“Dick”) Johnston joined the firm, where he practiced for 49 years until he retired. Neil Horton, a highly regarded leader in the California trusts and estates bar, joined the firm in 1964 and practiced until he retired in 2018.  Carolyn West joined the firm in 2002 and practiced until she retired in 2023.   Alex Bowman joined the firm in 2018.  Alex's practice includes estate planning, trust and probate administration.  Alex founded Bowman Law Group, P.C. following Carolyn's retirement.
